Frequently Asked Questions

Skybrary by Reading Rainbow: New Customers

  • Does the Reading Rainbow App just play videos from the original TV series?

No! This is a completely new digital library service, with HUNDREDS of curated children's books, NEW video field trips and much more! We feature 500+ books and over 150 video field trips with new content added every Friday. We do include some segments from the Classic Reading Rainbow TV series…they were just too nostalgic and fun to leave out!

A curated library of over 500 quality books… REAL BOOKS. These are books you can find in print at book stores and online. Nope, our service is UNLIMITED (meaning you can read and watch as much as you like)! After reading a book, they simply return it by dropping it into the return slot in their backpack.
  • Can my child read books offline?

Yes on TABLETS, Kids can "go anywhere" with the books ALREADY in their backpacks, even if there is no wi-fi signal around. Once back in wi-fi range they can continue to look for more books, watch videos and explore the islands. You CANNOT read books offline through our web service. You must have an active internet connection.

  • I’m having trouble downloading a book. Help!

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please follow the suggestions below.

    • Symptom: A book appears to download to the backpack, but you cannot tap and open the book.

    • Symptom: A book starts downloading in the backpack, but the green progress bar resets and it starts downloading again.

    • Symptom: A book starts to download but then you get a message that says "there was an error downloading, please close the backpack and try again.”

The most likely culprit is that the book is taking too long to download and a timeout error occurs. This can happen for any number of reasons. The following seems to work for most people:

1a. If you are using Reading Rainbow on the web, simply log out and log back into the service. This should take care of any book download issues! 1b. If you are using Reading Rainbow on a tablet device, reset the app by force closing it: double tap the home button and then swipe up on the screenshot of the app. Then re-launch the app and try again.

    2. When you try to download a book, download 1 book at a time and watch the download progress in the backpack (as opposed to leaving the backpack and browsing around which could bog down your internet connection). Some books are large files (> 10 MB) so let them download 1 at a time and wait for each one to complete. Observe the progress indicator and watch for any errors.

3.Make sure your tablet stays on and the app is in the foreground during the download. You can control this by changing the Auto-Lock setting. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock. Set it to the longest time or to Never to make sure the iPad doesn't go to sleep.

    4. Your tablet may be getting full. Check your storage by going to Settings > General > Usage. We recommend having at least 500 MB of available space.

There are also network factors outside of our control that could cause books to not download properly. These are additional suggestions to help you troubleshoot if the issue persists:

    • Try downloading from a different network. For example, try at home, at work, school, etc.

    • Sometimes networks can slow down by many people using it at the same time (e.g. others watching movies online). Try again at a different time when you know the network isn’t being used heavily.

    • Make sure you can access other internet sites and that your internet traffic isn't being blocked by any network or security rules.

    • Double check your connection speed. There is a free app you can download called "Speedtest.net" that will give you diagnostic information on your download speed. Download speeds slower than 0.5 megabits per second (Mbps) can have variable results.

If you still cannot get it to work, contact us and we’ll be happy to help. If you can, please provide the following information to help jumpstart our investigation:

    1. Do a speed test and tell us the results.

    2. Tell us where you are located (City/State/Country).

    3. Please tell us about your internet connection. Is it Cable/DSL/Cellular/Satellite? Are you at home/school/office?

  • Are there subscription discounts available for schools and libraries?

Our EDU product will be available in Fall 2015. Please look out for education discounts then!
  • How do I use my existing Reading Rainbow subscription on the web?

    1. Go to www.readingrainbow.com

    2. Tap "SIGN IN" in the upper right hand corner of our website.

    3. When prompted, enter your existing Reading Rainbow ID and password. Your subscription will automatically restore!

Every Child...Everywhere: The Reading Rainbow Kickstarter

  • The Kickstarter campaign has ended but I still want to help Reading Rainbow. Where can I pledge?

It’s not too late to join us!  Head to helpreadingrainbow.com to bring Reading Rainbow to even MORE classrooms and get limited edition rewards for your pledge.
  • Tell me EXACTLY what you plan to do with the initial $1,000,000 raised on Kickstarter. (Please.)

When this campaign reaches the minimum funding goal of $1,000,000, we will be able to:

    1. Build a new version of the existing Reading Rainbow app, designed specifically for classrooms and teachers.

    2. Make the existing (home) and new (classroom) versions of Reading Rainbow accessible on the web.

    3. Provide free year-long subscriptions to the full Reading Rainbow library to AT LEAST 1,500 classrooms.

  • OK. But you raised over $5,400,000? Where does the extra money go?

That’s a great question — especially since, together, over $6,000,000 (including a generous donation by Seth MacFarlane) was raised! We will be able to accomplish two more BIG goals:

    1. MORE PLATFORMS. We’ll be able to deliver Reading Rainbow across all major Tablets (iPad, Kindle Fire, Android) and on the Web. We are looking to eventually expand Reading Rainbow to more new platforms — including mobile phones and selected game consoles and set-top boxes.

    2. MORE CLASSROOMS. We’ll be able to provide Reading Rainbow for free to at LEAST 7,500 CLASSROOMS!

ALL of the money raised will continue to be spent on the same two goals: making Reading Rainbow accessible EVERYWHERE (on as many platforms and devices as possible), and to EVERY CHILD (by providing free subscriptions to US/Canadian classrooms that can’t afford it).

  • I don’t need the free subscription. Can I give it to another child, or donate it to families in need?

YES! If you don’t want or need your free subscription to Reading Rainbow, you’ll be able to give it to another child in your life, or apply your subscription toward helping a classroom in need. It won’t go to waste! Just forward your redemption code to the child or classroom of choice and they will be all set.
  • What if I don’t want some/all of the rewards? Can you just use the money to help more classrooms?

"YES! The ability to select physical rewards is now closed, BUT you can still support schools in needs. Here's how...

IF YOU DON’T WANT ANY OF THE REWARDS:

    1. If you pledged to our Kickstarter project, click on the blue button at the top of this page that says “MANAGE YOUR PLEDGE.”

    2. On the next page, select the top package (“No reward”), or the $5 reward package (to be thanked on our website).

    3. Click the green button at the bottom of the page that says “CONTINUE TO NEXT STEP.”

    4. Make sure the pledge says “No Reward” or “Reward: $5”, and click the blue CONFIRM button.

  • How do I tell you which rewards I want (e.g. STICKER vs MAGNET, SHIRT/TOTE/MUG)?

The timeframe to select additional physical rewards is now closed. If you would like to contribute to a school in need, please visit helpreadingrainbow.com for more information.
  • In the PICK 2 and PICK 3 reward packages, can I mix-and-match?

The timeframe to select additional physical rewards is now closed. If you would like to contribute to a school in need, please visit helpreadingrainbow.com for more information.
  • Can I get more than one reward?

The timeframe to select additional physical rewards is now closed. If you would like to contribute to a school in need, please visit helpreadingrainbow.com for more information.
  • When will you share the designs for t-shirts, etc?

The timeframe to select additional physical rewards is now closed. If you would like to contribute to a school in need, please visit helpreadingrainbow.com for more information.
  • What about families or classrooms that don’t have computers or web access? You should also be on [MOBILE PHONES / ANDROID / XBOX / PLAYSTATION]!

We agree! Even being on the web won’t ensure that we’re accessible to ALL children — we are also planning on bringing the Reading Rainbow digital library service to: mobile phones, Android devices, selected game consoles (e.g. XBOX, Playstation) and some popular set-top boxes (e.g. Apple TV, Roku). Be on the lookout for more updates regarding additional platforms!
  • You should also add [WINDOWS TABLETS, NINTENDO WII, ETC] to the list!

If there are platforms that will make us accessible to MANY more children, we’ll do our best to add them to the list. Since the Kickstarter campaign has ended, we’ve focused on the platforms that are available in the highest numbers of homes, but we know that there will always be more platforms worth considering. Our team is continuing to look into it!
  • Do reward subscriptions expire? Can I activate mine later?

If your rewards include a free subscription, they will NOT expire — so if you want to save them for a year or two until your children are the right age for Reading Rainbow, you can!
  • Will a Reading Rainbow subscription work ACROSS ALL PLATFORMS, or will I need to different accounts (and subscriptions) for the WEB and APP versions?

YES! All Reading Rainbow subscriptions will work across ALL available platforms. You’ll be able to use the same login (your Reading Rainbow ID) on the web and in tablet apps — and across all future platforms as well!
  • Is my pledge tax-deductible?

Generally speaking, Kickstarter pledges aren’t tax-deductible. (This is one reason it’s called a PLEDGE instead of a DONATION.) Since Kickstarter projects offers reward packages in exchange for pledges, your pledge is considered to be a transaction, rather than a donation. But we hope that doesn't keep you from getting involved -- even if you just pledge $5! Even though Reading Rainbow's Kickstarter campaign has finished, you can still donate at helpreadingrainbow.com.
  • Is Reading Rainbow a non-profit or 501(c)(3)?

As of now, Reading Rainbow is run through RRKidz, a for-profit company — just like Barney, Dora, and many other great educational programs! However, we are exploring non-profit status as a possible model for the future.
  • How can I volunteer to help?

We’ve gotten SO many emails from backers asking what they can do to continue to help support the mission of Reading Rainbow even though our Kickstarter campaign is over— and we can’t thank you enough! We are always looking for volunteers who want to donate their time, energy, talent, and help spread the word of Reading Rainbow. We have a lot of new projects coming out and we would love your help! Please email: community@readingrainbow.com to submit your information to become a volunteer.
  • Will it be available everywhere / every country?

YES! The Reading Rainbow app and service WILL be available everywhere in the world, unless the countries themselves have regional restrictions. We have no plans to limit where Reading Rainbow can be accessed.

However, while this Kickstarter will help us ensure that Reading Rainbow is AVAILABLE everywhere, the funds raised in this Kickstarter campaign will be used to provide FREE ACCESS to classrooms in the United States and Canada.

If you live outside the United States or Canada and want to guarantee that a specific classroom or school get free access, consider the ADOPT A CLASSROOM or ADOPT A SCHOOL reward packages, which can be used to sponsor classrooms and schools anywhere in the world.
  • Will Reading Rainbow be available in other languages?

We would love to expand the reach of Reading Rainbow, and are exploring possibilities to add foreign language books into the Reading Rainbow app. As of now, we have no immediate plans to translate the application itself (i.e., the user interface) into non-English languages.
  • What age is this for? Will you make it for older children?

Like the original television series, we believe Reading Rainbow’s service and content are best suited for 2-9 year olds. (However, we find that many older children enjoy the service too!) This is also a difficult question, since reading level is not actually tied to AGE: many children between 2 and 9 read at, above and below grade level.
  • Will the theme song be back?

Of course it will. It never left.

Classic Reading Rainbow (The TV Series)

  • Where can I find the full-length episodes of the Reading Rainbow Classic series for my kids?

  • Can I purchase Reading Rainbow Classic DVDs or streaming for my school or library?

Yes! Get it from one of our many resellers (or contact us directly and we'll help you out).
  • I was a Reading Rainbow Kid, and did one of your famous shows. How do I get in touch with you?

We are so happy to hear from you! Please get in touch and we will gladly help figure it out.

General Questions

  • Is LeVar Burton really involved in RRKIDZ, Reading Rainbow and the APP?

Yes! As Curator in Chief LeVar Burton has an active and daily role curating books, creating new video field trips and managing the day-to-day operations of the business. You can TRUST that he is with you and your child every step of the way.
  • How do I reach LeVar Burton?

Call him on his cell phone! Just kidding. The best way is to reach him is through his Twitter account, @LeVarBurton. You can leave a message on our contact page, however we can’t guarantee that he’ll see all of them. Fan mail?

    Send to:
    RRKidz
    13547 Ventura Boulevard, #209
    Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
  • Can I get an autograph of LeVar Burton?

LeVar gets a lot of fan mail and requests. It’s very hard for him to send autographed pictures to everyone who asks. He decided long ago not to use services that send “autographs” of stars when really it’s a machine that creates them. He really loves his fans and makes many personal appearances throughout the world all year long where you can meet him, get a picture and get a real autograph.
