Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Skybrary Family by Reading Rainbow: New Customers

Does Skybrary Family just play videos from the original TV series?
Nope! This is a completely new digital library service, with over 600 books and 250 Video Field Trips hosted by LeVar Burton. Plus, we add new content every week! You will discover some segments from the classic series in the app—they were too fun to leave out.

Where can I get Skybrary Family?
Skybrary Family is currently available for computers on the Web (right here on our
site) and can be downloaded from your iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire or Google Play (Android)
Stores. Reading Rainbow will continue to expand onto new devices over time!

What age is this for? Will you make it for older children?
Like the original television series, we believe Reading Rainbow’s Skybrary service and content are best suited for 2-9 year olds. However, we find that many older children enjoy the service too! This is also a difficult question, since reading level may not be tied to age: many children between 2 and 9 read at, above and below grade level. Skybrary can also be a great tool for students with special needs or who have developmental disabilities as they work through their literacy needs and goals.

What kinds of books are Skybrary Family?
In Skybrary, your child will be able to choose books from 7 themed islands—each home to hundreds of quality books and videos that celebrate diversity, family, and the world around us. Young readers are free to explore the topics they love most as well as discover new areas of interest. Each book has been lightly animated and has the option of being read aloud by a narrator using the Read To Me feature.

Are there subscription discounts available for schools and libraries?
Schools and libraries who are interested in purchasing our educational product, Skybrary School, at a discount or as a bulk purchase should contact schoolsales@readingrainbow.com.

How does the free trial work?
When you sign up through readingrainbow.com, you will start with a one-month free
trial with unrestricted access to all of the books and video field trips in our library,
available instantly on your supported device.

Will my credit card be charged at the time I sign up for the one-month free trial?
Nope. You will not be billed until after your one-month free trial ends.
If you enjoy your Skybrary Family trial, do nothing at the end of your trial and your subscription will automatically continue for as long as you choose to remain a member. There are no commitments and you can easily cancel anytime by turning off auto-renew in your account settings.

How much does the subscription cost?
Your first month of Skybrary Family is automatically free! Your child can explore everything the service has to offer in the one-month free trial period. After that, you can choose to subscribe for $4.99 a month or $39.99 annually. No matter what subscription you choose, you'll be able to access all of our books and videos on the Web, iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire, and Android Tablets.

Is there a limit to how many books my child can read each month?
Nope, our service is unlimited! To save space on your device we've designed Reading Rainbow to allow kids to "check out" 5 books at a time (just like your local library). After reading a book, they simply return it by dropping it into the return slot in their backpack.

Can my child read books offline?
Yes! Your child can add up to 5 books to their backpack for offline reading.  When you're connected to Wi-Fi, your child can read as many books as they want without ever adding them to their backpack—just choose the book icon rather than the backpack one and they can read it right away.

I have more than one child. Do I need to buy separate subscriptions for each one?
Nope! Each subscription includes 3 separate profiles. So each of your children can enjoy their own backpack.

Is Skybrary Family a safe environment for my child?
Reading Rainbow has been the most trusted brand in children's literacy for over 30 years and we are proud to bring quality literature into a digital space that is safe for kids. We take their safety and privacy very seriously; information is stored with the highest level encryption software and we never exchange or sell information to third parties. We are fully compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). To learn more, please see our Privacy Policy.

Are you going to build Skybrary for Windows tablets, Gaming Platforms, etc.?
If there are platforms that will make us accessible to many more children, we’ll do our best to add them to the list in the future. Since the Kickstarter campaign has ended, we’ve focused on the platforms that are available in the highest numbers of users, but we know that there will always be more platforms worth considering. Our team is continuing to look into it!

Download speeds slower than 0.5 megabits per second (Mbps) can have variable results. Visit Speedtest.net to test your download speed.

Will it be available everywhere / every country?
YES! The Reading Rainbow app and service will be available everywhere in the world, unless the countries themselves have regional restrictions. We have no plans to limit where Reading Rainbow can be accessed.

Will Skybrary be available in other languages?
We would love to expand the reach of Reading Rainbow and we’re exploring possibilities to add foreign language books into Skybrary. As of now, we have no immediate plans to translate the application itself (i.e., the user interface) into non-English languages.

How do I load books if Parental Restrictions are enabled on my iOS device?
Sorry. We have a known issue where books don't load if parental restrictions are enabled on an iOS device.

To get around this, go to:
Settings > General > Restrictions > Websites > Add a Website (under Allow These Websites)

From here you need to add the following two sites as Allowed Websites:
1. rrkidz.com
2. readingrainbow.com

This will unblock access to our services from within the app and the books should work great.

I’m having problems with my app. Can you help?
Yes! We're here to help! Feel free to get in touch with our support team. You can even contact us from within your Skybrary Family App:
1. Tap the Settings gear in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Tap "Need help?”

Please be as specific as possible in your description of the problem. Typically, someone will get back to you within 24 hours.

General Questions:

Is Reading Rainbow a non-profit or 501(c)(3)?
As of now, Reading Rainbow is run through RRKidz, a for-profit company — just like Barney, Dora, and many other great educational programs!

Is LeVar Burton really involved in RRKIDZ, Reading Rainbow and Skybrary Family?
Yes! As Curator-In-Chief, LeVar Burton has an active and daily role curating books, creating new video field trips and managing the day-to-day operations of the business. You can trust that he is with you and your child every step of the way.

How do I reach LeVar Burton?
The best way is to reach him is through his Twitter account, @LeVarBurton.

Fan mail can be sent to:
RRKidz, Inc.
PO Box 909
Burbank, CA 91503-0909

Can I get an autograph of LeVar Burton?
Not at this time. As you can imagine, LeVar gets a lot of fan mail and requests. It’s very hard for him to send autographed pictures to everyone who asks. He decided long ago not to use services that send “autographs” of stars when really it’s a machine that creates them. He really loves his fans and makes many personal appearances throughout the world all year long where you can meet him, get a picture and get a real autograph.

I have a book or an idea for one. Can I send it to you?
Thank you for your interest in submitting your book to Reading Rainbow! Due to the overwhelming number of requests we have received, we are not currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts.

Every Child...Everywhere: The Reading Rainbow Kickstarter

I don’t need the free subscription. Can I give it to another child, or donate it to families in need?
Yes! If you don’t want or need your free subscription to Reading Rainbow Skybrary, you’ll be able to give it to another child in your life, or apply your subscription toward helping a classroom in need. It won’t go to waste! Just forward your redemption code to the child or classroom of choice and they will be all set.

Do reward subscriptions expire? Can I activate mine later?
If your rewards include a free subscription, they will NOT expire — so if you want to save them for a year or two until your children are the right age for Skybrary, you can!

Is my pledge tax-deductible?
Generally speaking, Kickstarter pledges aren’t tax-deductible. Since Kickstarter projects offers reward packages in exchange for pledges, your pledge is considered to be a transaction, rather than a donation.
